Riding Towards Change

Cool Ridings Founder Lydia Heywood recently attended a powerful and thought provoking Women in Sport talk at the House of Commons.

The experience reinforced the importance of the working towards equality in the sporting landscape.

With thanks to Hartpury University and Hartpury College, the event brought together an inspiring panel of voices driving change in sport. A standout moment was meeting rugby legend Maggie Alphonsi MBE, whose presence reflected the resilience and leadership that defined the day.

Beyond the inspiring conversations, one message stood out clearly.

Behind every athlete is a level of sacrifice that often goes unseen.

In many ways, this is part of the journey towards success. It mirrors the early mornings at the yard, the long hours in the saddle and trucking around for competitions. However, the reality is far more complex. For many athletes, including those in equestrian sport, the time, travel and dedication required are not matched by financial security.

There is no guaranteed income attached to the discipline and determination it takes to compete at a high level. This creates a very real challenge. It raises an important question. How many talented individuals never fully step into the arena because the financial barriers feel too high to overcome?

At Cool Ridings, this is something we think about. Creating more accessible pathways into sport, particularly equestrian sport, is essential. We remain committed to being part of that progress by opening doors, creating opportunities and ensuring more people can experience the power of horses.

Fouder, Lydia, reflects:
“Day in, day out, I think about how we can support the next generation, ensuring talented athletes do not have to carry that burden alone. We will get there.”
