About the Founder

About Lydia.

Cool Ridings Founder Lydia Heywood is committed to demystifying equestrian sport by sharing her knowledge, networks and passion.

Lydia has experienced firsthand the challenges faced by underrepresented riders. Starting riding aged 11 at a riding school with support from her late mother, Claire, who worked tirelessly to keep their shared dream alive. Lydia quickly progressed to national-level show jumping before committing to eventing. In 2017, she secured dual nationality and began representing Jamaica at International level, a milestone that continues to inspire riders who have not been able to resonate with or see themselves reflected in equestrian sport.

Recognising that access and community are essential, Lydia led sessions at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton and become a mentor working closely with young people from inner-city communities.

Seeing Lydia compete for Jamaica resonated deeply with the riders, creating an instant sense of pride and possibility. It highlighted what representation can unlock and what’s missing when support structures aren’t in place. Lydia began to ask a defining question: “How can we create a path for these riders.”

With diversity still critically lacking in equestrian sport; Lydia founded Cool Ridings to create access, visibility and opportunities.

“Embracing equestrians from underrepresented backgrounds is vital to give us support the bright future it deserves”
